Many EU countries have a “VAT” and like feel like this is kinda targeting poor people. Like, for the rich, this is insignificant, for poorer people, a (example) 20% tax would be a huge burden. Why do they do this?

That is… An interesting way to run things.

I might have to look into the Netherlands a bit deeper. I know there’s a tax discount for the first 5 or something years so depending on how the job market is for backend devs there right now, it could be pretty good.

If you get yourself a job offer (not a vacancy) you can get yourself a staying permit. Getting into a school is an option too.

Tip: go trough Frankfurt airport in Germany. Much less paperwork and explaining to do there. Then take an ice train (inter continental express) to the Netherlands. No border checks :p

Oh, I’m Estonian. I could literally just drive to the Netherlands and not go through a single border check. It’d be a long-ass drive, but with a station wagon it’s easier to take my stuff with me than with a plane.

Any suggestions for software companies to apply to?

I would take a train, it’s much nicer. There’s a lot of small companies out there, with varying levels of spaghetti code.

I can’t give you a straightforward recommendation. But if your ethics are flexible, google hires people here.
