I think instead of going completely dark it may be beneficial to lock down the subreddit with a sticky linking to related communities inside the federation to help people find a new home

I wouldn’t be surprised if Reddit deleted such posts and then banned you for doing this. Although I am surprised they haven’t reopened all of the subreddits themselves.
They probably don’t have the human resource to cover all the modding required.
