  • people mistakenly associate Trick of the Tail and Wind & Wuthering with Gabriel despite being voiced by Phil Collins

Just saw an interview with Peter Gabriel where he said people come up to him almost daily and tell him how they much they loved Trick of the Tail. He just had this defeated look on his face when he said he had to keep telling them that was Phil and not him.

However, you may be overestimating the impact of Hackett’s departure on their shift to pop. Genesis the band was deeply in debt by that point and they really had to make the shift to more accessible pop in order to become profitable. Additionally, this was a time when all of the prog rockers (except Robert Fripp) were selling out: Asia (supergroup formed from Yes, King Crimson and ELP), ELP themselves (with their hilariously awful Love Beach album) and later Yes with 90125.

I watched a documentary at a film festival a few years ago about a Vietnam vet, who was there for the premiere and took questions from the audience afterwards. The vet mentioned how much he hated hearing “thank you for your service” all the time. Another Vietnam vet stood up and asked him a question, and the first vet started off his answer with “thank you for your service”.

  • Fun borzoi fact: borzois feature prominently in a chapter of War and Peace (Tolstoy’s epic novel which probably would have been better titled Whatever I Fucking Feel Like Writing About Next). The narrator describes one character’s prized borzoi and mentions that he paid a family of serfs for it. He doesn’t mean the character gave money to a serf family in exchange for the dog - he means that the price of the dog was a family of serfs. Imagine being that serf family and finding out why you have to move to a new estate.

I’m a school bus driver and I regularly get infuriated by people who drive past me when I have my red flashers on and stop sign out, wishing there was a cop around. Only once so far have I gotten my wish … and unfortunately it was the cop driving past me at 40 mph just as some of my kids were about to cross the road. I looked down and saw him with his phone in his right hand and his left hand on the wheel, not paying the slightest attention to what was in front of him.

I’m lucky he didn’t run over any kids, because I probably would have gotten shot.

  • I never once had a manager who even pretended to be a coder, and I’ve worked for a wide variety of companies ranging in size from a few people to tens of thousands. The only technical manager I’ve ever witnessed was myself when I managed teams of developers (and that only happened by accident when I wasn’t really paying attention). Even then I was less of a technical manager and more of a lead developer who also took on management functions because there was nobody else around to do it.

It certainly seems like a manager with actual technical skills would make the best manager of a team of developers, as long as they also have the people skills to do it. And didn’t harbor the desire to fire everybody and just do everything themselves - like I did.

or was it that they hired “career managers” whose only skill was to organise things?

My best manager was a former dentist who quit the profession after just two months because he couldn’t stand the idea of sticking his hands in peoples’ mouths all day long. I don’t think he had anything resembling formal qualifications for management.
