I think retaliatory downvotes happen either way if you’re in an argument. Same with report abuse, which, if it happens to a high degree, would be the moderator’s responsibility to ban the perpetrator (reports here are not anonymous like they were on Reddit).

Also, if there’s someone with an abusive mind, they can easily use another instance that shows Activity to identify downvoters. The vote is public either way for federation purposes, they’re just hidden from certain instances - at least on the user level, but they’re still there technically.

Fedia hiding the activity is one of those things that I kinda dislike, as it was an easy way to detect certain trolls.

I also specifically talked about Chinese products, as in Chinese brands. A Chinese company is going to have a different set of quality assurance & oversight than a western company that buys in Chinese components or does their manufacturing there. It also makes a difference in how much monetarily you are supporting the Chinese regime directly.

Like, I understand the markets are fucked beyond belief at the moment, to the point where there are niches without any or just bad alternatives (especially if money is an issue), but our consumer mentality still is partially responsible for how those markets shape and evolve.

There’s still non Chinese companies…

There’s a lot of things wrong with Amazon of course, but this switch to Chinese shadow companies and their garbage products is really problematic. They create a new “brand”, set up a new product they bought from some manufacturer in China, add a fuckton of fake reviews to boost themselves onto the front and when they sold everything they vanish, along with the product page and any possibility to share negative reviews from the lack of quality or other issues. It’s literally a scam and needs to change.

And try to avoid Chinese products whenever possible.

I already have a huge hate boner for Chinese products, to the point where I especially do not use their shops, and hate what became of Amazon, but this shit really takes the cake. And with all those shadow “brands” (how tf is that even legal?!) there’s no way to hold anyone responsible either. Just create another company, dump a few thousand positive fake reviews, and then when you sold everything you make everything vanish before any bad reviews start to pop up from pure negligence, lack of quality, toxic materials, etc, etc.

I would not risk it if you’re at risk of getting kicked out or something, especially if your host country is stricter on that type of content. Just join one of the existing instances and subscribe to whatever Lemmy communities you want to see federated with it.

I’m quite sensitive to Tankies and seen some other Lemmy instances that seem problematic but I have not noticed any mbin instances standing out in any way. But all mbin instances combined are just a few thousand users at best, so it might just be too few users to even make an impact if there was a specific Tankie instance.

Mbin is a community fork of Kbin. Even while Kbin was still a thing it was already much faster in making changes & additions than Kbin and by now Kbin & Kbin.social is basically dead.

I don’t think so, it’s just what I’m more familiar with and I usually try to avoid apt’s PPA hell as much as I can. But maybe I should try some others, as I couldn’t get Mullvad to run either yet. :/

Text gen web ui I tried quite a while before I went to koboldcpp on my previous distro and I could not get that to run without crashing whenever I tried to generate anything. Sillytavern is my standard frontend that I use, so any text gen software should inherently compatible with that anyway.
