What I’m getting at is a major website has at least a skeleton staff that can do something, even if that’s just pulling the plug.

I don’t even reply to most work texts after hours unless it’s someone saying they have to use sick leave. I don’t expect people hosting Lemmy as a hobby to be on call 24/7.

But I hope afterwards they’re transparent about what happened and how they’re going to stop it from happening again. If not, it’s easy to hop instances

People are acting like it’s some crazy hack, and not the 4chan rejects from exploding heads finally guessing an admins password a week after they got defederated. And after all that time chasing the mailman, they had no idea what to do when they guessed it

But this does highlight an issue with instances. I doubt the handful of admins know each other. Like, maybe an email, but for the most part if shit like this happens during “off hours” it might be a while before the top admin even knows there’s an issue

On paper it was “smart” to have it there because it was a tangible asset. Long term it was a waste of money, but canceling would have been worse before the sale because it would have been an immediate loss affecting the price.

I think what happens more is a “public outreach” company outright buys accounts that mod a lot of communities, then they offer “services”.

Like, they’d buy an account that low level mods a bunch of gaming subs, then the same company sells “consulting” to a developer to “improve the conversation”. Which would be subjective moderation that favors that developer.

If you’re a shady mod, you just don’t sell your main, and make lower alt mods then sell them.

I mean, if it’s real bad shit like violence, that’s where FBI comes in, right?

But bad actors would have to run a shell game of go between instances to recruit. And they’ve been doing that shit for decades anyways. Hell, it’s the same thing as under 18 punk shows back in the day when nazis hung in the parking lot trying to give booze/drugs to kids.

If everyone got the shit I got as a disabled vet, we’d all be a lot better off and the only negative would be rich people have a slightly lower high score that’s 100% irrelevant to how their quality of life is.
