When they run the most and the biggest popular communities on their instances, do most of the development, offer the best tools and services in the fediverse, they have become too big to ignore.
If they then start playing dirty, it is too late to defederate them. They will play dirty. Let’s not make ourselves dependent.

Only 2 clicks / pages down the road you can start registering an account, and you don’t see what the experience might be before that. Instead, you’re being presented tech talk about servers.
You might argue it’s not actually lemmy but just the landing page. I argue, it’s so good at being a scarecrow, most people visiting lemmy haven’t seen anything else except for that page.
The inner lemmy is pretty fine, I agree. Some parts are still confusing. For example, most people will not figure out they can search for content from within a specific community by carefully configuring the drop downs in the general search form. Most will look for the search directly attached to the community.
If Meta plays dirty, defederate them then. Now is just too premature.

What does that mean in the context of lemmy’s license? As I understand it, everyone is allowed to fork it away, but not allowed to change the license. Which allows everyone to fork it further away or back.
I don’t understand what control means in this context. Isn’t it a thing people can just modify and use, now and for all future?

When writing songs, I always wondered if that genius idea is actually just something I heard 10 years ago, but don’t remember consciously. Similarly, I wonder if I like a catchy tune because it is catchy in itself, or because it reminds me of something which I cannot recall consciously right now.
Sometimes, I had these moments later when the dots connect, sometimes not. With what confidence could I conclude something is new and original?

Let’s say one instance would get massive, and would stop federating and start charging for API access. If that happened, we would be in the same situation as now with Reddit. Yea, it would e a lot easier to set up your own instance, but you would still need to convince all these people to give up that main instance.
I argue it wouldn’t be the same, but much better for the users.
You can already make an account on another instance. Ditch the old, use the new. Problem solved. The big advantage is, you don’t need to look for a new platform, accustom yourself with the new environment, and so on. Switching between instances is much easier than switching between platforms.
Yes, you might lose access to some communities, but that would happen anyways if you switch platform. And community redundancies exist (the good side of ‘fragmentation’).
Hopefully, we will get GitHub feature request #1985 fulfilled: Moving user profile to a new instance, which would further ease transitioning between instances. (Don’t get too excited, doesn’t seem it’s being worked on. Consider contributing if you can.)
This would make it harder to excert power in awful instances, people can easily vote with their feet.
Or the other way around, cross post from the main platform (lemmy, kbin) to reddirt.
This also makes the new platform more visible on the sinking ship.
I like the way threaded comments are colored in the default scheme. Makes it very easy to see which subcomment belongs to which parent.
With a bunch of vertical lines, I quickly lose track.

I feel this particular protest worked very well!
reddirt made concessions, like exempting mod tools, and maybe even something for visually impaired people? But mostly it gave the fediverse a nice boost. Many people moved.
I wish climate protests had so much result in so little time with so little effort.

Some reported that edited/deleted posts/comments reverted back ‘by themselves’. I’m not sure wether that’s reddit restoring “their content”, or wether it’s because some content was locked in blackout subreddits at the time of editing/deleting. Either way, it’s probably good to check again after a few days and repeat the process.

You’re right, situations can occur. But it’s not a permanent thing. People can make another new account on an instance which they deem suitable after they have familiarized themselves with lemmy by spending some days or weeks in it. Expecting a bloody newcomer to choose a good instance isn’t so far from random choice anyways.
Also tbh, I have little to no interactions with people from my instance. I subscribe to topics I care for regardless of where they are hosted. People like me would hardly notice they share a server with nazis, as each would flock to different communities.
Nothing in biology is exactly identical between individuums. A common eye color is brown, although there are as many shades of brown as there are people.
It is just practical and how language, or even perception works, that we tend to categorize similarities, and strongly favor common occurrances over outliers.
