You’re right, the term has taken on that meaning by now. It’s just relatively short compared to the multi hour video essays I tend to consume the most.
Mostly short form explainers about interesting subjects, presented in a sort of breathless British TV presenter style. Like a young Attenborough but less posh. Pretty good channel.

Actual unpopular opinion: get yt premium. It gives creators the money they would’ve got for you watching an ad, while giving you an ad free experience, and also includes yt music which might take some adjustments if you’re used to Spotify, but then you will also not be supporting Spotify which is probably the worst streaming service in terms of paying artists.
(They’re all bad and many people would argue similarly against supporting Google via YouTube, so perhaps it’s a moot point, but that’s part of how I justify my sub to myself anyways.)
People accuse leftists of idealist thinking but in what fantasy world are you thinking your personal savings from selling your labor is ever going to come close to what would be considered “capital” in the sense being discussed here?
What’s missing is that you haven’t drank the Kool aid, if I had to guess. They lean entirely on you being a believer (and usually a devout one) for any of their material to land, whether it’s comedy or drama or music or whatever.
