The strength of the fediverse is that there can be a right wing fediverse, a left wing fediverse, a centralist fediverse, yada yada yada. Entire networks of different, unconnected instances can exist. There will probably be instances in between that act as bridges or for gathering stats.
It will be interesting to watch, but at least people will be able to join the instances with communities they like. The problem of course is that echo chambers are more likely to evolve, but it’s not like that isn’t the case right now.
And once we get instance bridged with the dark web, it could allow content from countries like China, North Korea, Iran, and other places that don’t want information getting out.
They desperately need to support horizontal scaling. I’m sure there are enough nerds that could help them out there.
I was wondering why you were mentioning IBM, then I read that they bought it for 34B. This decision tracks…
Just let these instance owners do what they want ? 🤷 If they want to pre-emptively defederate, that’s fine, let them. There will be instances happy enough to federate with them. Once there’s trouble, they’ll probably defederate.
The great thing about social media, is that you don’t have to reach everybody - you just need to reach your community. If your community isn’t on GAFAM then defederating won’t change the experience.
Nothing wrong with it. Here’s a website to help you choose the distro: https://distrochooser.de/
Personally, for gaming, I’d recomment Mint or Ubuntu. Probably your hardware will be supported. There’s also Pop!OS, which seems to be completely gaming related as well as SteamOS, but I’ve never used them.
You can run a hardware probe from the live USB to see how well the distro handles your hardware too

Not if you have a consensus algorithm and the machines all return a hash of the video they encoded. If they build IPFS support then the encoding machine could upload the file there, return the IPFS content address and the server can then pick an agreed upon address.
The epitome of a reddit user…
If it hurts the IPO, I’m all for it. My data on reddit is worthless anyway…
So he said not to upload a video generated like this?
ffmpeg -filter_complex "nullsrc=s=1920x1080,geq=random(1)*225:128:128[vout]" -t 46 -c:v libx264 out.mp4
Got it
Terribly difficult
Was mixer Microsoft’s attempt at entering streaming?
There are many other instances. Feel free to join them :)
See this comment for seeding to both clearnet and i2p. I2PSnark (the builtin torrent client) only interacts with I2P, but biglybt can do bridge.
kbin is planning on something like multi-reddits: https://codeberg.org/Kbin/kbin-core/issues/65 maybe lemmy could too
Could somebody just create a Matrix group/channel/room/space already?
