One of the things that weighs me down is posts making me dwell on the things that weigh me down.

No. I only use Android as my PC via AR glasses. Is there even any antivirus software for Android? Probably, but I don’t care I guess. Never had a problem.

FYI, you are able to edit titles on the fediverse in case you want to the missing word.

Counting calories/macros is good thing to do to zero your brain in on what foods contribute what - it’s honestly quite surprising and informative to do. But, doing it constantly is kinda obsessive and annoying. Same applies here too.

Feral cats are usually pretty easy to distinguish. They’re often in poor condition; skinny, dull coats. They have outbreaks of cat flu when numbers build up, with gross mucus around their eyes, and they are mostly wildtype tabby. You know you have a problem when you start seeing them frequently stalking through the hedges and you start seeing the same cat causing trouble. They shit in the hay barns and cause toxoplasmosis-induced abortions in sheep and humans, not to mention the catastrophic impact on native birds. They need to be controlled. Taking every feral cat in to see if they are chipped is really not an option practically, financially or sensibly.

Even so, mistakes are possible, but if at any point they directly start attacking livestock, like chickens, it really doesn’t matter if they are a pet or not. That’s the outcome for any animal hassling livestock, including dogs, and it doesn’t matter a jot if they are someone’s pet.

For the love of God, no! It ain’t a host if it ain’t up. This will just end up being very annoying.

Ah, well I come from a more brutal rural background I guess, but if any cats cause me problems with the chickens it’s a cage trap followed by a .22 to the head through the bars of the cage. Quick, painless, no burden on animal control but understandably some people would be reluctant to do it. I do the same for friends with feral cat problems who are uncomfortable with the final act.

I still find it abhorrent that people put animals in sacks and drown them. That really makes me feel ill (and angry), but I can swallow the lump in my throat when I have to dispatch a cat, sheep, chicken knowing that it’s the way that causes the least stress, and there really are no better options.

Assuming you’re in the US (I’m not) it can’t be too hard to find a gun-toting maniac to do the deed! (sorry)

I’ve been using signal for a few years. I’m now in a situation that I use two different phones but signal only allows you to be connected to a single device, and you only see the messages in your history for the particular device you received it on. You can’t migrate messages, the UI is extremely basic and isn’t a responsive design so you have no control over window size on larger screens. There’s just so many annoying little things about it, but overall it’s pretty solid. I’m looking for a better solution now though.

It really needs some more effort put in on UI design, data migration and linked devices. Development is very slow. I hoped it would improve but nothing has changed for years.

I’ve just been sorting my comments by highest score and replacing a dozen or so each day with something like “-> fediverse”. So far none have been restored. Most of the lower scored comments don’t have value to anyone anyway so I’m just ordering by most impact until I get bored.

Not participating isn’t the only choice.

On days I’m feeling particularly petty I go into discussions and vote down the good comments and vote up the bad ones just to make the signal to noise ratio worse. Yes, I’m that petty.

My take on it was that it was just flag you can set to openly identify the account as a bot, but nothing to prevent either a human or bot from lying. There’s bot disclosure laws in progress in the EU and California in some form, so it may be future proofing, too.

If nothing else, this should count as a wakeup call to the exploding-heads admins, that if these are just outlier users they should probably be reigned in. If there is pressure to defed now, it will only increase if nothing changes. If the instance won’t manage its users, that’s precisely why they will get defederated.

Yeah, I just signed up to lemmy after using kbin for a couple of days. The problem described is really annoying.

There’s a risk that disgruntled ex-redditors will collectively vote for the most terrible people they can find for mods, just to harm reddit and drive people here. That would be truly sad to see. Truly sad.

Edit: other appalling things I hope we don’t see are people going to reddit in down times only to upvote bad comments and posts, and downvote the good ones.

The very last thing we would want to see is the mods of large subs switching between private and public mode too often, because that apparently has to change permissions on all the posts in the sub, and was why reddit had downtime when they all went dark. They may even have the wild and outrageous idea to briefly turn off private simultaneously, only to go back private as a form of malicious compliance with Huffman’s warnings.

Don’t sign up to lemmy.ml or you’ll need to sign up again on a new instance when they get defederated. Tankies. I guess a blind eye is being turned right now because numbers are important for survival atm, but I wouldn’t consider it a future-proof instance.

Yes this is exactly what happened with the freenode -> libera split. Although we entirely lost some good people and the community was smaller, the reduction in toxicity made it all worthwhile. The type of people who defend reddit on this are not the type of people we want anyway.

This is the first real chance we’ve had to break the chains on corporate social media. We should all strive to make this work for the betterment of everyone in the longer term.

Much the same happened with the Slashdot -> soylent split but the community was already so small by then it had no chance of thriving. We don’t need a huge chunk of reddit to survive and thrive though.

Why can I not find this. We are talking kbin here, right?

It seems that federation is working on kbin, but not lemmy, so you will see lemmy posts on kbin, but not vice versa. It’ll be sorted soon enough. It’s just a bit annoying because I’ve replied to several lemmy posts and only now realise they won’t be seeing them yet.
